UK-Vietnam Institute of Education Development (UKVIED) is the first division launched by Education Research and Development Group Ltd (ERDG) – aiming at studying education gaps in developing countries and transforming innovative education approaches with an ambition of contributing to the positively significant change in education of those countries.
UKVIED prolongs the lead in bridging the collaboration in education between the UK and Vietnam, at all levels of education system. Thanks to the experience in education systems of the two countries, UKVIED is going to fill the demands of both sides. UKVIED targets, on the one hand, to amplify the UK education with its quality and trademark to Vietnam; on the other hand, to increase the mobility of exchange in both training and teaching of the two parties.
The Vietnamese economy is integrating with the world’s economy; therefore, education and training plays a crucial role in developing a high quality labour force to support the country’s development. Over the last 30 years, with the open-door policy, Vietnam has achieved great outcomes in internationalisation of education and training, contributing greatly to the development of the country. There have been numerous training collaboration programmes, ODA projects, research, lecturer and student exchanges, and joint training programmes between Vietnamese universities with overseas partners in general and UK universities in particular. The UK, over the past few years, has supported lots of Vietnamese students through the government-funded Chevening scholarship. Many of these graduates have been working hard to contribute their knowledge and capacity to the education of the country in particular and to Vietnam economy in general.
The Vietnamese government has also sent Vietnamese students overseas through various government-funding scholarship scheme such as Project 322, Project 911 and Project 599, and scholarship schemes from other ministries or businesses. Apart from that, there are many Vietnamese students who have been awarded scholarships by UK universities or businesses such as BP scholarship scheme, or going to study in the UK on self-funded basis. Currently, the number of Vietnamese students in the UK is approximately 12,000, making UK the third most populous country that hosts Vietnamese students. This shows that the UK is an attractive destination for Vietnamese students to further their education both at further and higher education institutions.
However, the collaboration between Vietnam and regions in the UK is still limited compared with actual potentials of both sides. Many Vietnamese universities have not had enough information and opportunity to partner with UK universities. Currently, according to statistics by March 2017, there are approximately 80 joint training programmes in Vietnam between 30 UK universities and colleges working in partnership with 30 education institutions in Vietnam. In those 80 programmes, 13 per cent of the programmes are at college level, 70 per cent at undergraduate level, and 17 per cent at master level. There have not been joint training programmes at doctorate level. Furthermore, in 29 foreign invested education institutions in Vietnam, there are only 2 UK invested institutions which are British University Vietnam, and British International School.

Dr. Van-Nhan Luong brings a wealth of experience from both the UK and Vietnamese education systems. His journey began in Vietnam, where he spent five formative years teaching at various levels, from secondary school through to university. In 2011, Dr. Luong embarked on a new chapter, pursuing his PhD and postdoctoral research, then teaching at several prestigious UK institutions, including the University of Southampton, the University of Sheffield, the University of Liverpool, the University of Birmingham, Aston University, the University of Northampton and Durham University. This unique dual experience has given Dr. Luong a profound understanding of the strengths and needs of both education systems. Through UKVIED, he aims to create a powerful bridge between the UK and Vietnam, amplifying the quality and reputation of UK education in Vietnam while fostering greater exchange opportunities in both teaching and training. His vision is to not only enrich Vietnamese education with the excellence of the UK’s approach but also to facilitate meaningful, collaborative exchanges that benefit both countries.
